Farmhouse Hutch Makeover

Hi Hometalk Friends! Today I'm sharing the story of a neglected estate sale hutch. I found this poor thing in the back of the shed, covered in tools. It sat in my garage for a while because I knew it would be a task to redo it, but I finally did. Here it is after I loved it back to life:
And the sad, neglected piece before...
The top was in rough shape.
And the drawers? The picture says it all...
My plan was originally to paint the entire hutch white, but after painting the top, I decided it was too much white. I then sanded the top back down to reveal the beautiful wood beneath:
Staining it was the right choice. I used Minwax wood conditioner first, then three coats of Minwax Dark Walnut stain. I sealed it with two coats of wipe-on poly, sanding in between each coat.
To paint, I used DIY chalk paint, sanding the edges slightly, and followed with clear wax to seal.
My ironstone and aqua blue dishes look right at home here!
Remember that nasty drawer? Bye bye purple velvet!
These knobs from Hobby Lobby are perfectly subtle.
Now this piece will be loved for years to come!
This was a lot of work to bring back, but so worth it to see it shine again!

Have to laugh when I see distressed furniture called "beach themed."

I live on the ocean and salt air and harsh sunlight is rough on wood, metal, just about everything. We constantly have to sand and repaint to avoid that look. Ha ha ha!
