Not sure about your setup, but the plug should attach to the pull rod. The plug probably has some kinda of hook that has come undone. Reinstall the rod and try to hook it with the plug assembly. Otherwise, you can stick your toe in the drain or shower.
Now I know what you are talking about.... the Delta single-handle shower/tub control with the push-in shower divertor. I don't know the answer but I'm sure other members do. Hopefully it is a pop the handle off, pull the cover and replace a part....
is the diverter in the tub spout or in the faucet itself? If it is in the tub spout your best option is to replace the spout it doesn't have to be a Delta spout any spout with a diverter will work. if you look under the spout and see an allen nut, loosen the nut and pull the spout off. If you don't see an allen nut then the spout is threaded on be careful unscrewing it you don't want to cause more work inside the wall. if the diverter is in the valve then i'm not sure how it fell out, but

would need to see a picture or a model # to let you know what to do.
Kathleen..I thought we knew what we were looking at but now I'm not so sure....we are still stabbing in the dark...
Is or was there a pull up knob on the tub spout itself that you pulled up to get the water to divert from the tub spout to the showerhead? Is it that knob that has pulled out?
Or..... do you have the delta faucet model that has a single control knob about the size and

shape of a good sized lemon on the wall that you "tilt" up to turn the water on and you twist it left or right to control the temperature... and there is a rod a little bigger around than a pen, about two inches long below that knob that you used to push in to divert the water to the shower but now that has fallen out?.
The only part in a tub spout is the divertor itself which is contained within the spout itself.... so the answer to your question is no...there is no part you have to look out for. Except don't be messing with the tub spout unless that knob on it is the one that has failed.
You should be able to slide the diverter back into the spigot and screw the knob back down to secure it...unless it is stripped somehow. If so, carefully unscrew the tub spigot by turning to the left....and take it with you to HomeDepot or Lowes....use a little teflon tape around the treads first and then screw the replacement back on....should be good to go!
Look underneath the spout close to the wall there may be an allen nut that you need to loosen. If so loosen the nut and gently twist and and pull the spout off. Then take to a hardware store for a replacement. If no allen nut do as Andy said.
thanks all! The diverter is part plastic and keeps popping off of the shaft inside the spout, so we'll get a better one that won't keep popping out. thanks!
Anyway you can provide a picture? I'm having trouble visualizing this "plug pull" you are referring to in a bathtub faucet. Thanks...
What might go wrong when I unscrew the spout from the wall? is there a part inside there that I need to watch for?
