Halogen is still a good bet - another choice might be rope lights - I have both. The light (color?) looks the same to me, but you probably also want to consider price, and ease of install and replacement.
The halo gets pretty hot, and I have to be careful that nothing comes in contact (decor, etc).

You can also find EnergyStar-rated fluorescent fixtures for undercabinet lighting. They use a lot less energy, and don't get as dangerously hot as the halogen lights.
I agree, LED is the way to go. More expensive up front, but they last for years & burn cool. The halogen get so hot they can heat the dishes & raise the temperature of the room in summer, argh!
My only issue is thet the LED don't dim. I'd prefer not to use halogen for the heat issue. We're getting close. Have to finish the bathroom first. Just getting ideas together for when we're ready to start the project.

And for an option up grade to LED. It's not much more in price and is Energy star approved lighting and very safe.
But they cannot be dimer but they soft on color and save energy.
We put under wall cabinet and inside cabinet with glass door in bar are turn out very good and home owner very happy.
