Gardening: What's the best way to deal with water runoff on the side of a house that has a steep slope to a level grass backyard?

There was grass but it has all washed away. Need a cost effective solution.

    Dig a trench at the bottom of the slope and direct the water flow away from the level yard ...»
    area - probably out to the curb.
