@Rudi Corn starch will suffocate little worms on the tomato plant. But I have found that by planting dill and/or marigolds around plants, (all plants) work really well. I also plant a lot of nasturtium seed to keep bugs at bay. You may also want to GOOGLE rotation gardening and companion planting.

I recently read, in a garden magazine, that the marigold as a deterrent to bugs is a myth! However, I really think it does help keep most bugs off the plants...maybe not all, but many. I hadn't heard of dill but that is a good one. I noticed that anything around my oregano doesn't get bug bites either.

No corn starch is not a insect repellent, try diotomocious earth, garden centers carry it, it keeps bugs n worms n beetles from veges, just rinse well before consuming fruit. I have used it on broccoli raab leaves, potato leaves and under my fruit trees for insect control, also works for slug problems, sprinkle on ground around hosta, veges!

I found that sprinkling flour on tomato plants solved my problem with those green tomato worms that can destroy a plant in no time. I just have to remember to reapply if it rains.
