My garage door opener is acting weird.

It goes up just fine but it won't come down unless you keep your finger on the button until it is comletely down. Also, It can be opened from the control in the car but it can't be closed that way. Anyone else had this problem?

Check to make sure those little "safety" lights that prevent the door closing on children or whatever are aligned and not obstructed.

Yeah, sounds like a sensor problem. You are overriding the sensor by holding down the wall button. As Alan said, check they are aligned and clean, and check the wiring for the sensors. If all else fails, you can replace the sensors.

Hi Diane, this is a very common problem. Most likely it has something to do with the safety sensors at the bottom of your garage opening. If they are not working properly the motor will not close as it may be a safety issue. Try to check and make sure they are both lit up on and stead and not blinking, usually they are green and red or green and yellow. Also check the wire connect to the eye. Sometimes they get look and sometime the photo eyes get knocked out of balance. They must ...»
face each other. You can also purchase new safety eyes, they come in a pair and you can do it yourself appx $45 per pair or we can service it for you. $80.25 plus parts. I hope this helps and pls call if you would like to get help over phone. 770-489-9726. Jerri

if it is those safety sensors, it won't work at all, or it will cycle a bit, then return up, even holding thumb on.

I believe this is in the adjustments for force. There is an up force adjustment and a separate down force adjustment.

Dianne needs the book for her particular unit. It will have the troubleshooting guide and ...»

instructions for that unit and how to adjust things. If she does not have it, she can find the pdf copy online with a diligent Google search

Fresh batteries in your handheld unit may also help if they are getting weak.

Thanks to everyone for all the good info. The sensors seem to be aligned and I cleaned them. Tomorrow I have to check the wires. If that doesn't work I guess I'll replace the sensors. Thank you again!!

Have you read the book yet? Replacing sensors could be a waste of time if you don't look at the manufacturers troubleshooting guide.
