We live in the Midwest...snow, rain, etc. etc. Elements of cold cold weather. Can this be done. We don't use salt on ice but we do shovel. Will polyurethane last? or PolyCrylic?? or do I have to get a Marine grade Poly?

Get some kind of sealer that is rated for outdoor use. You might have to recoat in the spring if the shoveling scrapes off the finish.

I would go with the marine grade, it is worth the money, I did a paper bag floor and I liked it very much in my last house, but in truth it was in a guest room that didn't get lots of traffic or wet often. But I did think the floor was durable and attractive and who could beat the price?

What is the porch made of? Wood, concrete? I wouldn't advise putting paper bags over either of these. I think that in the long run it will fail and you'll have a worse mess.
