I'm pleading for ideas on how to create an even surface for kitchen countertop & backsplash before painting. I thought of laying thin sheet of plywood but won't work with the way prior owner built everything. PLEASE help!!

Are you painting them to look like a natural stone, marble, or what? If so, I think the texture might be a plus. If not, you might try a cement product named Ardex Feather Finish.

If you are painting them to resemble natural polished stone they would look even more realistic as they are. My humble suggestion would be to enhance what you have, they were obviously made to look like slate or stone, so go with that! I'd love to see your "after" pics, just don't stress about it, (I should take my own advice) lol, have fun with it.

I'm not sure what your counter tops are actually made of but it looks like poured concrete or faux concrete which is a very desirable high end look these days. Click on the link in the recommended boards section below on "DIY concrete countertops" or just google it. That company may even have a product for smoothing your existing tops.

You could use something like Encore Countertop kit depending in the look you are going for. Haven't used it myself yet, but it has gotten good reviews.

Resin. It will fill the depressions and self level.

Personally IMHO, I think the texture is cool!

This looks like you might be able to sand them smooth but really not sure what the tops are made of...WHAT ARE THEY MADE OF?

I agree with the others who've said to work with the texture rather than against it. Man, that concrete look is a big thing these days! You've already got a start on it :-) Just paint it to look like poured concrete countertops and you're miles ahead. Don't know what your countertop is really made of, but I think it's really great looking! Pictured is one idea for a sort of 'natural' concrete look. But this website shows many different looks. http://www.concretenetwork.com/photo-gallery/concrete-countertops_2/

They do sell paint that levels itself out. And acrylic sealer that is also self-leveling.
