Suggestions for kitchen cabinet pulls?

Beth
by Beth
I had to replace my kitchen cabinets when a fire destroyed our home. It's been re-built and I am trying to decide on the type of pulls/knobs to use. We're doing it ourselves to save money. My first thought was vertical curved pulls to match the appliances. I got some samples of the curved pulls (at a great deal) and thought they looked nice but I was told that I have "a lot of vertical going on in a small space and knobs might look better". I would also welcome any thoughts or suggestions on what to use for a back splash too.

Your cabinets look great! I would bring home some different samples of knobs and pulls to look at them in the kitchen to see what appeals to you. Its hard for anyone to just see a photo and suggest a style...you have to see them in person in the room to see what fits best! Good Luck!

i think u should take silver spoons. u can use a dremmil to make holes. bend around a can to make curve..finding vintage spoons can be fun too.

In my opinion, glass knobs would look elegant. I was counting your cabinets and that many stainless handles might be a little much on the eyes and too 'matchy'. Look up 'glass knobs white cabinets' in google images.

Consider matching the finish of the knob or pull to your kitchen sink faucet. I have a color scheme in my kitchen similar to yours and matched an oil rubbed bronze faucet to oil rubbed bronze knobs. I found a bird cage style knob for the upper cabinets and used bin pulls in oil rubbed bronze for the drawers. You might want to mix things up a little.

@Nurselisa I like that idea and the way you mixed things up, but here's the kitchen faucet we put in and I haven't found anything that looks close. I now wish I had the foresight to put smaller glass cabinets on top rather than such tall vertical ones all around.

when you have selected the pulls go to your local home improvement store and purchase a template to use so that every door pull is placed in the same location. Just hold the template in place and mark the drill locations. Also, use a small piece of masking tape where you will be drilling the holes. It will keep the cabinet doors from chipping. Your new kitchen looks great! Good luck.

@Diane Blank Thank you Diane! I've already purchased the template and your idea about using the masking tape is great! I hadn't thought of that.

If you have a bit of patience and a few days for them to be delivered, look at overstock.com. We built our entire kitchen and I wanted something very unique for my kitchen cabinet handles without spending a ton of money. I was shocked at all of my options and was thrilled when I found my perfect knobs and pulls for about 60% less than the exact same ones one other sites. It also only took 3 or 4 days for them to arrive. Whatever you choose think of the handles as the beautiful piece of jewelry to tie together your outfit. . Good luck on your search!

@Kimberly A Thanks Kimberly, I'll take a look on Overstock. I've always use E-bay before for things like this and had good luck but maybe Overstock will offer some different styles. The example shown in my picture was only $1.66 on E-Bay! A set of 40 of the curved ones is only 41.80!

maybe get some wooden pulls and paint them one, two, three different colors? A pop of fun bright color would give a unique and uncommon vibe.
  • Handles were the last thing I added to my cabinets almost 6 months after we moved in. I wanted something timeless, comfortable to the hand, durable and attractive. Add some of the decor items you've selected and then find the handle that compliments.

Don't forget, you can also mix styles of hardware. Using the same finish, you could use knobs for the doors and pulls for the drawers so that is something else to consider. For every knob choice there is usually a matching pull. However, like jewelry, I think cabinet hardware is all a matter of personal preference. If you ask 20 people, you are likely to get 20 different suggestions. There is no "right" or "wrong" choice. My kitchen cabinet guy didn't like the cup pulls I chose for my drawers. I basically told him, "I DO like them and it's MY kitchen so put them on, please." Don't worry about someone else's opinion that you have "a lot of vertical going on in a small space and knobs might look better." It's YOUR kitchen. If you like the way the curved pulls look, then for heavens sake, use them!

I agree with Shari. There's nothing wrong with using some knobs and some pulls. And take your time. You can still get everything open without them while you are deciding.

The one thing no one has addressed is functionality. Give some thought to how small/large your hands/fingers are along with those of the house members who will be using the kitchen. Also, I actively stay away from pulls and knobs that stick out and have the potential for catching the side of a pocket on my clothing or apron. Pretty and stylish are "nice to haves" but if you turn the air blue with language every time you try to open a door or drawer or you tear your favorite article of clothing on a protruding piece of hardware, well... As a way of pointing out my thoughts here, when I get ready to purchase a new beverage cup or mug, I always "try on" the ones on the shelf. If I can't hold the item safely and comfortably, I it put back on the shelf. Pretty coffee/tea cups that you have to "pinch" the handle with your index finger and thumb are just useless. A similar test can be applied to to cabinet hardware. Just my thoughts.
  • As for your backsplash, don't know what your style is, but judging from the kitchen, how about stainless steel w/glass? They have a ton of mosaic styles (you can even buy them in Lowes or HD now). Or look at Glass Tile Mosaics online. Since your cabinets, countertop and flooring are subdued, you could go with a more 'extravagant' looking backsplash to give the room some personality. It's a great space!

Thanks Beth, it definitely needs some color! The cabinets are actually a very light gray and I thought the wall color I selected would be darker (I didn't have the 2 to compare). As it turned the walls and cabinets are almost identical as if the whole room was spray painted with the same color. This was not intentional! It's an open floor plan and I think I'll paint whole back wall of the downstairs just a bit darker. I was thinking of some kind of glass tile for the back splash too but do what you mean by stainless steel w/glass? Is this a type of mosaic tile with a mix of stainless steel and glass tile?
    • @Beth Oh there are sooooo many to choose from! SS w/all colors of glass or stone in all sorts of shapes. Here's some pics of what I mean. You could even use a carrara marble mosaic,,,,maybe a small herringbone carrara? They also have the marble with stainless. Check 'glass tile oasis.com' , Overstock, or even "Discountglasstilestore.com' for ideas. I love the ss in the arabesque shape!! Think of the backsplash as the jewelry for your kitchen. As for the gray, Behr "Dolphin Fin" is a good gray and a gorgeous dark gray is "kendall Charcoal" by Ben Moore. Check out "Tilebar" , you can order free samples. They have some killer marble mosaics. Since the area isn't that big, I would splurge on something fantastic!! Sorry for the pic overload!! Email me if you have any other questions. I have tiled many a' kitchen/bath!!!

You know, there's no rule that says you can't have pulls down low and knobs up high. That's why the companies make coordinated pulls and knobs. I agree about the pocket problem...but I like a knob on upper cabinets so I can hang recipe cards, jelly bags,ETC instead of having another item on the countertop.

Use the vertical on upper and coodinating "cup pulls" on bottom

A nice glass tile back splash, in soft greens or soft blues would look nice. As far as pulls go, you have shaker of mission style fronts. I just saw the reply from Beth H. and I think the tile that is fourth on the top row would be great. Google mission or shaker pulls and see what comes up. We have mission or shaker fronts on our cabinets and actually found some really cheap. I don't think ours would do for your kitchen as they are oil rubbed bronze. I am going to gogle them myself and see what comes up. If I find anything interesting I will post here.

@Beth I don't like that you had a fire, I like that you are looking at silver for the pulls. Just so you know. Sorry about the fire, I have been through one myself. Such a tragedy and a headache to boot.
