Can you make the hypertufa pots with cement only so they will be smoother?

You can, but they won't be hypertufa then. And they'll be very heavy. The reason hypertufa is so popular is that it gives the concrete/cement "look" without so much weight. From Wikipedia: "Hypertufa is intended as a manufactured substitute for natural tufa, which is a slowly precipitated limestone rock; being very porous, it is favorable for plant growth. Hypertufa is popular for making garden ornaments, pots and land forms. Hypertufa is relatively light compared with terracotta or traditional concrete and can withstand harsh winters, at least down to −30 °C (−22 °F)."

Linda is absolutely correct. You would have concrete pots, not hypertufa pots. However, try this: line the mold or box you are using with plastic wrap or a thick plastic liner (garbage bag, etc). The smoother the plastic - ie no wrinkles or folds, the smoother the hypertufa. Mine come out really smooth and I have to rough them up with files and rasps. I guess the grass is always greener!
