Play Tent With Necktie Roof

When designing our son's "big boy room" we decided on a menswear theme - think argyle, pinstripes, houndstooth, and lots and lots of belts and neckties.
I have always liked the hanging play tents sold at numerous children's stores, but most have bold, colorful patterns that wouldn't have worked well with the more sophisticated color palette of our son's room. In asked my mom if she'd be willing to sew a tent, and I purchased a dark navy suiting fabric with thin white pinstripes. Originally it was going to be as simple as that, but then my mom and I started brainstorming {which always leads to trouble} and we came up with the brilliant idea to use neckties for the top of the tent!
I really wanted this tent to be a meaningful addition to Beckett's room - one that would provide a connection to all of the men in our family. We asked each of the other men in the family for a tie, including dad, uncles, grandpas, and great grandfathers. We modified an existing play tent pattern, and then came up with a plan to add the ties to the roof of the tent.

We added labels to the back of each tie to document which tie came from which family member, and then purchased thrift store ties to fill out the rest of the space.

This tent is our son's absolute favorite place to be. He'll sit in there for hours and hours reading his books!
At the link below, you'll find the full tutorial for creating a necktie topped play tent (including how we laid out and attached the ties, how we created tiebacks for the tent flaps, and how we added lights inside to make it a better place to read.
