Need to put a waterproof cover on our pergola, not sure what to use.

Our pergola is open with wooden beams for the top. We have a sun shade that we use on the top during the summer. We would like to have a permanent waterproof top. There is not a slope on the top, so we're not sure what to use that will not compromise the structure.

I would simply put a baton across one of the long sides, so that the covering will naturally slope to the other side. Will you be covering it with waterproof fabric or roof sheets?

Do you get snow where you are. Any roof structure will have building regulations about the weight it must be able to carry in bad weather, make sure for insurance purposes that you adhere to those. I agree with Valerie, but would use the multiple sizes of 2x2 on the long beams for proper support. On a four beam you leave the first as is then 2x2 on next , then 4x2 on next and end with 6x2 on high side. Try to buy the sheets in the correct length.
