My Moen kitchen faucet is about 5 years old. What was an occasional problem occurs

everytime we turn on the hot water. Almost immediately the stream gets narrower and

a very loud sound (hammering I think its called). noise is even worse in adjacent

bathrooms. Not only is it hard to live with but I wonder if its doing any damage.

Turning it toward warm has helped but now the hammering continues for awhile

I don't think it's the faucet itself but perhaps the way it was installed that could be the cause of the "hammer" Thehot water pipe may have been pulled loose from the support bracket behind the drywall and under the sink. One simple solution could be to use some of the "Great Stuff" expanding foam and after drilling a 1/4" hole a few inches above where the hot water line enters the cabinet space (be slow and stop immediately if you feel resistance) Shake the can vigorously and squirt the ...»
foam into the drilled access space and let set overnight. The expansion foam should fill in the area around the pipe and "set-up" enough to freeze the rattle. I't's worked for me before. You can get a hose clamp around the pipe and gently pull the hot water pipe coming out of the wall untill you feel resistance and tighten the hose clamp snug against the wall and if you did both you'll know if you'll need more investigation. Some Plumbers even have fiber-optic cameras to "see" behind the walls and locate drips and rattles. Maybe some Plumber Members here on HT can offer some more remedies. Best to you JL

The internal valve in the faucet is beginning to fail. Perhaps because of hard water or other chemicals within your water. You need to take the faucet apart and replace the internal cartage assembly that controls both the flow, and pressure within the faucet.

It is not too hard to do, once you figure out how it comes apart, Typically its just one screw or clip and the whole thing comes apart. ...»

Google your faucet on line on how to take apart and you will find the trick you need to know if you cannot figure it out yourself.

there is a blockage somwhere on the hot side water line that is causing the stream to narrow only when the hot side is turned on. It could be in the cartridge but more likely is in the shutoff valve under the sink.

Water hammer only occurs when water is turned off. If it sounds like a popping noise JL is corrct the straps have come loose and the expansion and contraction of the pipes when they heat and ...»

cool is causing the noise. If you have CPVC/Pex/Or P.B. pipe be careful what type of foam you use make sure it is compatible with the pipe you have

Yeah Ben Frankle! But probably won't hurt to clean up the old faucet too. Good get on the foam interaction, I've used the technique on mobile homes, brick exterior hose bibs and under-sink rattlers and (cross all fingers!) no issues yet...of course I've moved around a bit...hope no angry wet clients huntin' me down here on HT!!!:-) >Yipes!< Best 2 ALL! Hmm I know that sound. I think it is a gasket restricting water flow or a blockage in your pipe that may have come from the water heater due to mineral build up. I am assuming that you did not have this problem before. If this is a new problem you can purge the pipe by closing the valve under the sink, disconnect the hose, place the hose in a 5 gallon bucket, open the valve and see if you have the noise. If you have the noise disconnected from the sink then you know the problem is in the ...»
pipe or with the pipe itself. As long as you have it disconnected fill the 5 gallon bucket and let it purge out the pipe. Wait a bit and try it again and see if the noise is gone, that is assuming you had the noise in your pipe. If it is in your pipe and won't go away you may need a flush or some sort of clean out or even replace that part of the pipeline, get a plumber for that.

If the noise if not in your pipe then you know it is in your faucet. You can try to remove the faucet and back purge it, after removing the valve, and see if that clears it up. If it doesn't solve your problem you can contact Moen directly and let them know about the noise from your faucet, that is assuming that is where the noise is coming from, the may be able to help you out. Or you can just replace the faucet.

Isolating the cause of the problem is key in developing a solution. Good luck!
