Chalk paint. It adheres to about anything. The GOOD NEWS... WALMART has it now. I haven't tried theirs yet but it is much much cheaper than the very expensive brand that retails for nearly $40 a quart. Any other type of paint on a kitchen cabinet will need lots of prep and primers to make sure you remove oil and grime. It really can be as simple as chalk paint. The steps - I would wipe them a bit just to smooth any crumbs etc that might be on them...remove hardware, paint. It would be time consuming but probably much easier if you take doors off of cabinets although not necessary. Happy painting ! ! !

Suggestion: Get a cheap quart of lacquer thinner, a glass bowl and a rag. Open a window so you don't get stoned. Pour thinner in the bowl, dip rag and wipe the surface. Don't worry, it won't hurt your skin since it's the same ingredient as nail polish remover. It will wet, degrease, and clean easily in prep for *any* kind of paint. This proceedure is also great for old finished wooden furniture.. It will melt the finish and eliminate cracked clear coat damage. Once done the wooden piece can be re-glazed with little sanding effort.. P.S. ultra fine steel wool works great on natural wooden pieces too.. It's like a loose flowing Zip Strip you use to wipe away decades of grime.

We just did this last year. We removed all the cabinet doors, numbering them as they came off their hinges with painters tape. Wash the cabinets with a diluted tsp solution (use gloves, tsp is drying). When washing is finished go to the beginning and wipe down the cabinets with a damp clean cloth, rinsing often in clean water. This applies to the doors and drawers as well. I used a rotary sander with the finest grade sand disc I could get and gave the cabinets all a fine sanding to take off the varnish/poly. Repeat for doors and drawer fronts. One tip is to do one cabinet section at a time, finish it and then repeat for the next section of cabinet. Once the cabinet pieces have dried, use a roller (I got mine at Big Lots) to put on a primer. Repeat with drawers and door fronts. Before painting your final color, decide what you need to do about hardware. We were replacing all of the hardware and had to putty up the holes of the previous pulls. Use a good grade paintable wood putty for this step. Give the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts a light sanding and then wipe with a clean damp cloth to remove any dust. Using a foam roller (I used the smallest size I could find) to keep it stroke free, lay a thin top coat. If you are painiing the interior of the cabinets you need to follow these steps as well. Let the top coat dry (check the brand of paint you are using for drying time) and then put on a nice finish coat with a new foam roller. Let this dry for a few days to make sure it's completely set. One thing I didn't do that I wish I had, was to put a thin coat of matt polyurethane on the doors and drawer fronts. It makes wiping the doors around the hardware easier. Rehang the doors in numbered order. Attach hardware. Done. Don't clean the cabinet doors for several days to make sure all of the paint is completely dry to the wood. I used Kilz as my primer and Behr paint for the cabinets. They turned out very nicely.

Can chalk paint be used over oil base paint?
    • Marsha Schwarz Marsha Schwarz on Apr 30, 2015
@Sue As we know... oil and water don’t mix. But the good thing about chalk paint is it will almost always stick to about anything, I even painted over a mirror. So...if I were you, I’d pick a little oily corner and put a few brushstrokes and let it dry. If it isn’t working, I would apply a coat of Zinsser to prime it. I think the main reason most people like chalk paint is because it will paint over just about anything without priming or removing topcoats or sanding etc. Give it a try. For those who want to try, you can also make your own chalk paint. Just google for the recipe.
