Carol on Apr 29, 2015Maybe paint it the same color as your trim or even the same as the walls. I would not paint the back of the shelves a different color than the wood because that will draw attention to it. To me it feels that if you blend it into the surrounding area, the items on the shelves will be the focal point. Good luck with your project--hope we get to see the finished product!Helpful Reply

Lucy Nunn on Apr 29, 2015If you want an industrial modern look (?) consider covering the wood with dark stained rustic cedar boards. Not expensive, easy to work with, and will hide the classical fussy wood. I like Danielle's idea of adding doors to the bottom. Stain the shelves and put metal on the fronts of the shelves....maybe?Helpful Reply

Joy.schottenloher on Apr 29, 2015Well I really don't think you ought to paint it. The wood is lovely. But if you are tired of looking at it then why not just insert some lights, buy a few reflective chrystal pieces. Playing with lights can add a whole now look to a worn blah case. ( which yours is not!). Some time if you have any Christmas figurines they add to the charm of the decor. Hope I could help in some way.Helpful Reply

Susan Bott on Apr 29, 2015Maybe make your ledge larger in your wall opening and add some stools below (I see a coffee cup on the top of the cube storage that gave me that idea). Then add more shelving in the built ins and put the boxes, baskets, etc from the cubicle in the built ins. Paint the built ins if you like white or leave wood toned if you appreciate the wood look more. As Joy was saying above, you could put wallpaper in the back of the built ins or even put mirror in there to reflect everything.Helpful Reply

Marjorie Olson on Apr 29, 2015It looks as if you could take off the facing boards that that you don't like; that is, the ceiling to floor trim. If you can do so, then maybe you could use the barn boards you are thinking of using elsewhere to frame around the unit and the floor to ceiling areas in the middle. You can probably find someone to cut the boards to the size you need..Helpful Reply

Palma Minnich on Apr 29, 2015My first thought when I saw your picture is how the shelving reminded me of the shelves in an old-time store. What a cool element for a rustic modern look! Paint the shelves a warm grey, including the wall in the back. Maybe scuff up the finish a bit too. Get a couple of free-standing rustic cabinets in metal (like a small locker cabinet?) or wood (maybe crates?) and center them in each section. Then add your rustic barn wood to the wall with the opening in it to create a finished rustic corner. Polly Andrews on Apr 29, 2015Paint it a shade or two darker than your wall color. Loose the black - it's horrible. Put framed pictures of nature or whatever is your favorite thing in the bottom openings. They should be large enough so that only 4 or 5 inches of wall show around the sides. You could mount them but they would look great sitting on the floor.Helpful Reply

Eroque022810 on Oct 09, 2016It would really help to know if this is part of the family room or what. Since you have electrical crods yet a baby seat. If you don't need it to display anything and don't appear to want to use it for books I would take them down and apply the wooden boards but take around above and below counter which it won't matter if you extend it because you can remove board and replace under counter again. Then it would be a focal point of that room. Don't live with something that doesn't make you happy.Helpful Reply
