The walls in my living room are painted gray. I have hardwood floors and two end tables and I don't know what type of a lamp to buy.

Lamps are chosen not so much by the color of your walls and floors but more by the style of the room you're going to do. It would be helpful if you can tell us a bit more about the style(s) you love.

Actually a picture would help too!

grey walls and hardwood sound sleek and contemporary - I'd look at polished nickel. But previous commentators are rights, that description might suggest contemporary to me, but you may interpret it differently.

Sounds like you need a pop of color in that room. i would look for some ceramic with a pattern with a nice white background then floral, oriental or other pattern with some nice red, greens, yellows, oranges to pop a bit of interest in the corners of the room. Shades neutral.

If your room is on the contemporary side, consider clear lucite lamps with black or colored shades. Lucite with black shades will work with any color scheme and the black shades look great against the gray walls. If you choose a colored shade, you can use that color as an accent in other parts of your room--pillows, candles, potery, etc. Home Goods has beautiful lucite lamps that are really affordable.
