Old key?

Hello. My husband and I own a house that was built in 1910. We have been there for 8 yrs, and boy is it a lot of work owning such an old house. However, the fun part is that even after 8 years, we are still finding really neat old things that have been hiding for a very long time. My husband just found this key in our basement and we were wondering if anyone can tell us what it is for, and if it's something old, left behind from the original owners, or maybe something not so old that the second owners left behind. Any ideas of how old it might be, and also what it was used for? Thanks so much!!!

It looks like an old Freezer key , but i have never seen one quite like that. I just looked again... it could be a gas lamp key? I would keep it for good luck if I were you. It is an old wives tale that if you keep a found key you will have good fortune and doors will open to you !!!

Well I looked it up and found a folding skeleton key, they can vary greatly in appearance but the barrel and the simple notch means it falls into that category. What is was used for could have been anything.

do you have steam heat? It may be a key used to "bleed" the air out of radiators

I showed it to my neighbor who used to own apartment buildings & he says it looks like a key to a boiler that provides steam to radiators.

Is there an old hardware store or locksmith close by or someone that might know some local history of the area? Looks like once the key is inserted the handle folds over.. Maybe a meter type cover. Let us know what you find out.
