I have a very, very bad back. The neurosurgeon has said I MUST not bend over. I already had most of my garden in containers because of a vole problem in the yard but they were too low. So my husband put two cinder blocks under each container to elevate them. Most of the containers in the veggie garden are either the felt 'smart pots' or the larger plastic nursery-type pots. For my tomato pots, which are in a much sunnier area, I spray painted them a light yellow to reflect the sun away from the plant's roots. We lay the cinder blocks, side by side, on their sides and put the pots on top. For most of my flowers, however, we had many tree rounds about eighteen inches high, and my decorative pots are on those. I would love to build some raised beds but the budget says not at this time so these pots, many of which I got free or for little cost, will have to do.

Cinder blocks are awesome for people with back or joint issues. My husband put our dryer on cinder blocks so I can fill and empty it without bending.
