How to make an upright freezer on the porch blend in or decorate

I have an upright freezer on my front porch and there's no where else for it to go. I'm trying to give the porch a facelift and the freezer is not helping. Any ideas? Also I'm having "designers block" on ideas for the porch. Here are some pics. Please don't judge. It's BAD right now. My fiancé lived here by himself before I moved in...
My porch has sooo much potential, but I'm not getting a vision yet! Help!
The coin dog box is NOT staying there. Lol.
Don't you just love the cow skull hanging from the post? Yuck!!! I'm moving that to somewhere else, like.... In the woods. Lol

I would build a wooden box around it with a door to open to get to the freezer. You could paint it to match the siding, stain it, or whatever you wanted to do, but the box would conceal what is actually there.

Well depending on the decorating theme of your porch and of course the age of the freezer you could paint the freezer ... for example I hae a nautical deck if would paint it and and like a sail boat or anchor to it....also depending on your climate you may be able to decoupage it.

The wood box is a good idea, But it wouldn't have to be a box just a 3 sides with or without the top. Maybe a combo of the two ideas, 3 side wood paint top

Personally I would buy a wired, insulated outside building to go beside the house on the side where the cars are.

You're right, there's a lot of potential with that porch. Since it's so big, you could screen in the half where the freezer is. Either full screen, top to bottom or add wood to the bottom half and screen the top. Maybe paint that part a brighter color, add a ceiling fan with a light. Paint the freezer a contrasting color - if it needs painting. Or add themed decals if you go with a theme. Would really like to see the finished results when you decide.

Hi Leah...guys living alone really have great vision, huh?? How about just painting the fridge or gluing thin boards onto it for a rustic look without building the box..stain or paint the boards as you wish. I would try to move it to the other end of the porch along with moving the grill down there as well...sort of an outdoor kitchen look with a smallish table to help with grilling, etc. Move all of the other clutter off and put back just a couple of chairs closer to the door. At the other end, keep the table and chairs. If the porch is the only place to keep toys and bikes, etc., then you should take Ruth's advice and get the outside building to put those things and the lawnmower AND the freezer.. Add lattice to the bottom of the porch, some pots of flowers on the porch and keep it neat and tidy.

Leah, there are lots of great inspiration pins about painted refrigerators on Pinterest that would apply to your freezer. I agree with Judianni about moving it to opposite end of porch along with the grill to mimic an outdoor kitchen. Add a simple island or table for extra space while grilling. If there is enough space you could move the dining table to that end as well. Then use the other end for a conversation area, maybe put up drop cloth curtains to add interest, a few hanging baskets, some form of string lights for ambiance, and pops of color either in pillows, chair cushions or even a nice art piece on the wall. Play around with it until you love the look, I find that if you take pictures along the way it helps you visualize what needs to be put where or what area might be lacking. All in all treat it like an extra room, don't be afraid to add the things you love.

Great porch. I love the skull, it has a very rustic, natural component that adds to the ambiance. Keep it there!!! My big question, is why the freezer is on the front porch? If there is no room in the house, could it be fit into a closet space, or laundry area? I've done both when living in apartments. Just curious.

I typed in refrigerator in the search bar on this site so I could find it again and don't see why it wouldn't work on your freezer if you're interested. Kind of like hiding it in plain sight!

Hi Leah, Wow, now that's a porch! I think you may be having trouble seeing the potential because many things on the porch really go in a garage. The plant sprayer, trash cans, toys, ladder etc. all go in a storage area. Hopefully you & your fiancé can make a different area for that. If not, then I'd move the items that go in the garage to the far end and hang some outdoor curtains to hide it. I would move the table and chairs to the right of the door in front of the large picture window. On the other side of the porch I'd make a conversation area. Looks like you'd have room to move things away from the wall too. I see some of the boards are pulling up in front, so you need to address that first. Then I'd add some pretty metal house numbers and a larger outdoor light by the door. I'd make a stone path to the front of the house from the driveway and add a step in front of the door. I'd give an illusion of the entry to the porch by adding some flower pots to the edge on either side of this step. Plant some shrubs and flower beds along either side. A tall plant could help hide some of the stuff on the porch too. I'd say no more leaving the lawn mowers just anywhere, they need a specific home when someone is done mowing. It might be the side of the house or in the back, but definitely not in the front yard. Good luck! Looks like a fun project. :)

The other stuff that is on the porch isn't staying there. Lol. And the lawnmower set out away too. Lol.

I started to suggest that you paint it the same color as the house. But, on second thought, make it a focal point! I think the shutters are forest green--a nice color to put throughout. Center the freezer between the two windows, flank it with a couple of tall mismatched tables at a second hand store. (If you can find tables with shelves underneath, all the better.) Paint everything the same green. (If you use a roller, it will go fast and leave a subtle stipple effect.) Place terra cotta pots with plants on everything. Spray paint all the lawn chairs and table the same color. Make cushions for all the chairs to have them blend together. I'm making seats and pillows for my front porch furniture right now. I got a cool quilt on sale and have cut it up--raw seams are quick and easy and work well on quilted fabric. Cut two matching pieces that are pillow sized. Place a little smaller piece of batting between the two pieces with right sides out. (Hit the batting with a bit of glue to hold it in place.) Then just pin and sew a 5/8ths inch seam around to make a cushion. I made the ties out of the quilt edging because I liked the look of it, but gross grain ribbon would work, too. I'm going to Scotch Guard the cushions to help with bird poop issues. Mainly, just have fun and enjoy the great setting! susen

Thanks Ladies for all of the suggestions! And as far as the " junk"., it will all be put away. The porch is not its home. Lol and we have a huge above ground pool to the right of the porch so everything has to tie in together.

There is a shelf paper that is pretty economical, that has a wood grain look, I have seen people use it to disguise that white fiber board and it works nicely.

If you closed in a small area on the left site of the porch you could use the closed of area like an outside kitchen with freezer. Sort of like a extra room but with a food counter open to the rest of the patio.

Don't know what your budget is, but I think you need a garage attached to the house.

Paint it brown and have some Sunflowers painted on it and then decorate the porch to kind of go with the brown and yellow. Some greenery would look good in pots.
  • Sue Albrottpn Sue Albrottpn on May 04, 2015
Some hanging basket would also look pretty.

Cover freezer with checkered tablecloth like a buffet/sideboard; after all, how many times a day do you go in to the freezer? Of course, don't set stuff on your 'buffet', just whisk off tablecloth.

Make a plastic lattice box around it. Hang some small flower pots with plant on the lattice. You can hang anything on the lattice with "S" hooks like small garden tools.

If it has to stay then make it look like you want it there....looking at the porch, move everything that would make an outdoor kitchen to the right, the table, fridge, and the cabinet....make it intentional and then paint the fridge the same cream as the house...dress the table up and move the chest that is sitting in the front of everything to the right side of the porch....then on the left side, get rid of all the the "line up" of chairs and grill....turn that end into a sitting area with a diy couch and chairs maybe a porch swing....it will look like you have added to rooms and they are on purpose....a great place to entertain....then if your budget has room for a rail around the porch that would be great!I have a huge hotwater heater on our patio and had to find a way to hide it....painted it the color of the bricks, brought in a folding screen and then placed my seating area to the side...it looks intentional and very welcoming!

http://www.hometalk.com/diy/decorate/rooms/sk-s-old-dinged-refrigerator-to-a-vintage-steamer-trunk-3582248 Have a look at this. She painted her fridge to look like a steamer trunk. Something like this might work well. If you can't move it it may as well be nice to look at.
