Substitution for using horizontal blinds?

I have 8 windows w/cheap-vinyl horizontal mini-blinds. Costly to replace, any suggestions that we could do & still have not fully exposed windows, but to let light in during day & dark at night?

There is a tutorial somewhere on here where a woman took blinds and added fabric to them and it looked quite easy and the end result was really great looking.

Hi There, Had a similar problem but with verticals...I painted them! I've seen designs also but I needed a quick fix... I also couldn't afford new ones & I received a lot of compliments...even got the paint free!!!

Depending on size of windows, shutters (or folding doors) with louvers would look nice. You could paint them to go with your decor or walls.

There is somewhere on this site or Pinterest that a woman took mini-blinds removed some of the slats and made" Roman Shades" out of the old mini blinds. Looked really great! Try to find the site, also has a tutorial, looked really simple> Good luck KBH

Here's the link to the tutorial KathyBH referred to: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/living-room/curtains/diy-faux-roman-shade-mini-blind-4295243 Sounds simple and looks great! I may try it in by bathroom. Good luck!

There was a post on here the other Day. She took all her vertical panels down and stored them away. Then she got normal curtains and curtain hooks. She put the curtain hooks where the verticals were attached to. Next she made a inexpensive valance box and attached it, so you couldn't see the box from the verticals. It looked very nice! Hope this helps

My friend hung a large curtain rod and hung curtains. I'm sure that's a no brainer and you may be looking for something with more character or unique, but it really was a cute simple clean look in my opinion, I don't have sliding glass doors and always seen the vertical blinds on them so hers caught my eye and had a updated look with still being a simple inexpensive fix for privacy. =)
