Refinish counter tops

Can laminate counter tops be refinished? I saw on a home improvement show that they were repaired with some sort of epoxy and then painted is that realistic? Where would you get these supplies?

yes yes yes...we have done 2 of ours, my friend did her kitchen counter..check the posts, there are lots of them, you do not need to buy a kit...clean well with tsp or alcohol, can sand a little to rough up, prime a couple of coats..paint a couple of coats, then poly a couple of coats. Holds up great, I have also done laminate furniture this way. a small foam roller works the best for me..ps, you can always get a piece of laminate,a drawer, old counter top etc and experiment on it.

Like Bernice said there are numerous posts on this site, with lots of great info. Just make sure to use a high adhesion primer. You can start with this: http://www.hometalk.com/b/7030353/diy-countertop-ideas http://www.hometalk.com/search/posts?filter=how%20to%20paint%20countertops

I did my bathroom shower walls and new counter top with Granite Transformations - it's only like 1/4 inch material made from crushed granite - looks fantastic!

@Ken H I would have used Granite Transformations if I had not changed the configuration of my kitchen, since they go over existing counters. Their counters look really good.

Simple answer is yes some can be repaired depending on the damage they suffered. I'd dare suggest you take pics and just go to a few different counter top dealers or cabinet shops and get professional advice. Some shops may offer good advice for free. And can suggest products to use that would make the job easier and faster.

Refinishing is a stop-gap measure and in the end you will have a product which is easy to chip and scratch. With the cost of refinishing kits, it is likely not much more to just replace

@Mary-Ann My 3 counters lasted till I renovated. The 1st one with textured paint lasted about 5 years, and the other 2 (white Krylon Fusion) over 10 years. They never chipped. I had one small spot that lost its shine in the bathroom due to an abrasive cleaner I suspect. You treat them like laminate, no hot pans, wipe standing water and no abrasives. You don't need to use expensive kits. It cost me about $20 for the 1st one, and about 3-4 cans (I think??) of Krylon paint at less than $5 a can for the last 2. I paid about $1000. for laminate counters... a huge difference...
