I have used a recip saw for this....but you need to know where your plumbing and wiring might be...cutting willy nilly can be disastrous. Work in smaller sections and piece it out.
some pry bars and plumbing tools will be needed when you get to the drain and supply lines.

Lynn, I just tore out my old fiberglass surround. It is pretty difficult. I used an electric jig saw and cut it into pieces and pulled each piece out. There should also be roofing type nails at the corners under the green board. You should were a mask, because sawing creates a lot of dust and other things not good to breathe. BE CAREFUL NOT TO CUT ANY PLUMBING!!!!!
KMS is right...it's a reciprocating saw. I use the short blades and hold the saw at a steep enough angle so as to cut through just the anticipated thickness of the surround or tub. the other thing is a razor knife. I use this to cut around the piremeter of the tub/surround about 2" to reveal the flange used to secure the surround to the studs.
