hi all,

so i started to try to repair the rubber thingy at the bottom of my electric garage doors. who knew how complicated it would get?? ultimately the buck stopped when we got to the tension wire that started to look a little dangerous. (also, then i noticed the warning that in fact it is dangerous to mess with it, so...) now we have to find someone to repair it.

any ideas. we're up in rhinebeck ny 12572

or is there a way for me to repair it without causing damage?

Don't mess with the spring yourself. It is under tremendous pressure and can cause serious injury if you don't know what you are doing.

At the top of this page is a Search box. Hover over the arrow where it says Search Posts and select Contractors. From the box next to it (changes to Choose Industry), choose Garage Doors. That will give you a listing of garage door contractors in your area.

The garage door bottom seal is pretty easy to replace, just a little time consuming. I WOULD NOT try to repair the tension springs, they can be VERY dangerous. Call a professional, overhead door company for that.

Yes, please use a professional to address your spring issue. I have a garage door company in metro Atlanta and the springs are under great pressure. THey are what take all the weight off of the door. You can get hurt easily if the tension releases as you might get your hand caught. Typical repair estimate in my area is anywhere from $125 to $280 depending on the spring type and how many you replace.

Linda, I am confused. The bottom garage door seal is not that hard to replace, you can get a replacement seal at a big box store and they generally slide on (at least the one I helped my neighbor with yesterday) but as others noted the springs are a completely different matter.

at this point i have called a professional to take care of this. we couldn't figure out how to install the replacement seal and we started taking this and that screw out and before we knew it, well, let's put it this way, it was time to get help before anyone had to be hospitalized. the spring situation came into play...

so, we seem to be resolved at this point because someone is coming tomorrow to take care of it ...»

    thank you all so much.
