Do anyone know the name of this plant?

I live in San Diego. This plant is in a yard in my neighborhood. It lost all it's leaves over winter, and the new leaves come out red and turn to green. The stem actually looks like a Plumeria. Thanks!

please post when you find out what it is.... I have something rather similar, with varigated leaves.. (NOT magnolia family, she said plumeria-like stems... like mine... magnolias have woody stems.)
