Mold on ceiling

Janet chambers
by Janet chambers
I have mold growing on my wood ceiling on my screened-in porch. It is 10' high and I am 5'3" and can't get on a ladder. What can I put on it to get rid of it? Maybe with a mop or a paint stick?

No, no attic and the roof isn't leaking. I think it is just from the dampness and humidity. Probably not a good place to put wood but green board and paint would just keep chipping off.
  • They have mold remover sprayer stuff at the Home Improvement stores. I think you may be able to hook it up to your hose and just spray it on.
  • After it dries, consider having someone either paint it or coating it with a good outdoor spar varnish. Otherwise, it will keep happening. They have special paint that inhibits mold growth.

Do you have to mix it with water? I don't want to get the wood any wetter because I'm afraid it would warp.

It would take some serious water for wood to warp. You can spot spray with a spray bottle or spray it with a pump up sprayer. Either way, it will not hurt or warp. However, you might want to install more ventilation for your attic. Because over time, moisture accumulation will cause serious damage and mold. Lack of proper ventilation flow is what caused the mold in the first place.

Product called Moldcontrol by Microbium - I got it at Homedepot. Follow directions - really does work.

There is no attic above the porch. I will try the microbium. Thanks for all of your help!

I agree with Beth H., if you seal it or paint after the mold is gone, you shouldn't have a mold problem anymore.

Homemade from Jillee's website: 12 cups water 1 cup hydrogen peroxide 1/4 cup lemon juice Have used it for 2 yrs, excellent on mold. You can mop it on. or spray. Best, Carol

We had an environmental specialist do a mold check in our home. He said distilled vinegar is the only thing that we could purchase over-the-counter to kill mold.

I have the same problem with my patio room ... to remove the mold, I used Murphy Oil Soap and applied it with a sponge mop... you may have to look for a long handle or an extendable handle you can screw into the head of the sponge squeeze mop.

I agree with Ms.Williams. Even if there is no Attic per se, there is a dead air space above the ceiling of your screened in porch, & the sooner you get it ventilated & spray that mold with vinegar or some other mold killer, the better. the way it is right now, it is like a ticking time bomb...one day it will all cave in if something is not done to fix it.

Actually, we are getting our house ready to sell and don't want to do anything major to it. I liked the vinegar idea but am afraid it may make the wood lighter. I have some Murphy's Oil Soap and I think I will at least give that a try first. I've had the ceiling up for three years and this is the first time I've seen any mold, so hopefully this will work since it's not that bad. If not, I will try one of your other suggestions. Thanks for all of your help!

I use hydrogen peroxide on most things like mold or mildew. Way cheap, nothing bad chemical wise. Peroxide works on most things "organic"

@Rosalie chow I just buy it from the Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, Dollar General it comes in square bottles. I got mold/mildew off my outdoor cushions with it and yes it took a few applications but it still works. I use it for every thing organic stains.

Don't know about down there, but if you sell without disclosing some issues, the new owners can sue you for repairs, etc. Something is causing the mold. Maybe ventilation issue? I would use a small drill bit and make a lot of small holes in the ceiling - they won't be visible. Then I'd clean up the mold.

@Marion Nesbitt My husband checked it, it has adequate ventilation. I think the mold is there because of dampness outside and it doesn't get any sun. I think there was such a small amount, it's not a concern. Cleaned up nicely with Microban.

I used a swifter with wit floor pads to clean mildew off my bathroom ceiling. Maybe you could use it wrapped with heavier cloth dipped in ?
