I bought this rocker at goodwill for $28.00. Does anyone know how old it is and what the symbol is on the seat? I don't know if I should paint it or what to do with the rocker any suggestions would be helpful. The chair has good bones with some small areas of wood missing on the front that can be filled in with wood putty.

Appears to be from the late 40's , one a reproduction...do not paint of repair until you get professional advice... The leather appears to be newly added which may affect the value,,lovely chair !

If you aren't wanting to paint or change it in any way, just put a pretty planter on it with a bright flower grouping! It's a beautiful chair!

I agree with Rossa. It looks like a reproduction. Maybe paint the whole thing and stencil the back? I saw some really pretty stencils at Michaels yesterday that would be perfect for the back! Or just paint it , take out the leather seat, it looks like a dragon of some sort, and if there's a hole stick a plant in it? I would love to see what you end up with!

Stunning!! Regardless of whether it's an antique or a reproduction or whatever, you made the buy of the year with this. Absolutely love it!!

This looks like and antique, I wouldn't do anything with it, because it will change the value especially if you paint it, though you could restain it. I don't know what the symbol is except decorative. You have a very nice piece of furniture there.

you should be able to turn the chair over and see is it put together with screws staples take a look but the chair is beautiful, if you are going to keep the chair and don't care what it might be worth then paint away. I like the wood stain though it's pretty. You could put a small colorful pillow on it for color.

Possibly an arts and crafts piece. Is the back done with veneer? The leather seat is definitely a redo, look under the seat and see if there are holes indicating a cane seat. As to age hard to tell I would say either from the 30's or a reproduction from the early 60's.

@Pgl The back does not have veneer and there is a hole under the seat. Thank you, Linda

My guess at the symbol on the seat would be that it represents one of the elements this one being wind possibly.

The chair may be old but the leather insert looks like a replacement judging from the condition and color of the leather and the brads used. If you love the look of the wood, get some good quality wood treatment to restore its beauty. If you're not a fan of the wood tone, go ahead and paint it. It's your piece now....feel free to make it your own :-)

Thank you so much everyone has been so nice to respond to my questions. Everyone seems to thin the seat was replaced. I wont be destroying something that is rear. I will take your suggestion and make it my own.

I wonder if the hole in the middle was meant to be like a commode, ie takes a potty and someone filled over the hole wih the leather? If it was a commode, being a rocker it would be pretty precarious to use as such! Check the screws. If they look old and have a single slot for the screwdriver then it is probably antique. If it has screws with the cross or X on the top then that is Phillips head screws which came into use later. Might give you a clue to the age of the piece.

That would be so funny. I took a picture of the underside it is put to gather with bolts and screws.
