Coat Closet Turned Mini Mudroom

Our coat closet is teeny tiny and wasn't very functional. It's located in an odd space to the side of the front door. I decided to remove the door and turn the space into a mini mudroom.
Before this closet was a mess! It was a place to throw stuff, close the door and forget about it.
When the front door was open it was difficult to access the closet.
Now it's a completely different space!

I painted the top portion of the walls dark gray and I used beadboard wall paper on the lower portion.
The shelves and supports are made from pine boards that we had cut to size at Lowe's.
I added hooks for coats and bags and some wire baskets for extra storage.
To corral all the shoes I made a rolling shoe bin. I started with an unfinished crate, painted it and added casters. Then I used leftover scrapbooking letters to label the crate.
I love how much more functional this space is now! An added bonus is it stays neat and tidy because I can't close the door and hide the mess!

Thank you very much for posting this! It's absolutely lovely and gives me hope for that hole covered by a door in my narrow hallway that the contractors deemed a "coat closet"...(it sure is if you wear an American Girl doll size coat!) ;) Would you mind if I asked the dimensions of your closet? I'd greatly appreciate it. Again, beautiful work & thanks for sharing.

It's 28 inches wide/across and 2 feet deep. It's small but the worst part was the location. It's crammed in a corner behind the front door and was hard to access. Removing the door helped a lot! Good luck with your project!
