My kitchen used to have a recessed area with fluorescent lighting
under plastic sheeting. I took down the plastic sheeting as it was ugly.
Now I need ideas for this space. That space is recessed about 13"

People pay a lot for tray ceilings and you essentially have one there. I would trim it out with crown moldings, paint the sides a deeper color (or one that matches your kitchen. With a white ceiling and trim, it will be a beautiful architectural feature and no one will ever know that it started out with a different plan. Photo below.

A light kit in the ceiling could potentially replace the fluorescent bulbs.

Thank you, it's one of my grandsons. I didn't think about keeping the fluorescents, but that is a great idea too.

I would definitely make the ceiling an asset. I would hide the fluorescent lights behind crown molding to get great light and an attractive look, rather than stick track lighting there. I really dislike ceiling fans as they make me dizzy. I would rather keep the centre as plain ceiling. Good luck

I agree with @Karen. Remove the fluorescent lights, replace with crown molding, replace the fan with a beautiful hanging light of your choice, and paint as desired.

Coved ceiling - fabulous...light it on the perimeter and find a fabulous center fixture and spring for the cost!

Agree with replacing the flourescents and ceiling fan with alternatives.
