Trex material repair

Sandra
by Sandra
My trex deck is very different in color (upper and lower) due to sun, although it shouldn't change. It also has white specks. Any ideas of products that may adhere to it ? I"m holding on till I can replace it. (NOT with TREX)

Another HomeTalk member had a Trex question earlier today...and now yours has me worried about the durability and longivity of my daughter's 4 year old Trex deck. I looked at the Trex website and saw there is a 25 year limited warranty. Have you checked with the company about the warranty? Here's one paragraph I saw about fading. (Don't know what "5 Delta E (CIE) units" is. ??? The Product is designed to resist fading. No material is fade proof when exposed to years of UV exposure and the elements. The Product is designed to resist fading, and will not in any event fade by more than 5 Delta E (CIE) units. It also mentions if paint or other coating materials are applied to the Product, the warranty will be voided. If you want to read more about the Stain/Fade warranty, here is the link: http://s7d4.scene7.com/is/content/Trex/trex-transcend-enhance-select-fascia-limited-warrantypdf.pdf

Behr has a treatment / sealer called Overdeck. It has a rubber and sand base. It comes in colors. It will fill-in cracks and protect it. It does have to be rolled-on. Dry time 5 hours. Hope this helps.

I would contact Trex before I would do anything to the deck

Think twice before using Behr's Overdeck or Lowe's Restore...it will peel off. I'm in VA, and from what I've read on the boards, neither handles real cold, snow and and ice. I used Restore 3 years ago and last winter killed it - stripped it down to bare wood. Now I have to figure out how to restore the Restore. There are class action suits in some states, and many, many unhappy customers. I used Deckover on my mom's deck and after one winter, it was peeling in spots. Needless to say, I'm not happy because both are expensive.

Dear Kathy Spinks, good advice for Sandra. I wouldn't touch Behr deck stain or Overdeck ever again. Both peeled badly and have ruined my deckspace. Now having to strip bare and it is certainly a lot of hard work. I would go to Benjamin Moore for advice. Sico products have a good reputation.

My husband and I spent over 10,000 dollars on trex deck and within 3 years it fell apart. I mean dissinagrated, the whole deck turned into what looked like sawdust. The manufactors didnt do a thing about it. Should have had a warrenty but they refused to own up to it. So I DO NOT recomend this crappy porduct to anyone!!!!!!!!!!!

Trex had bad boards that were produced in their Nevada plant - like between 2004 and 2007. We purchased a home in 2014 with a deck that had these disintegrating boards. We contacted Trex and even though we weren't the original purchaser of the boards, they still gave us nearly $3000.

My trex has been up for 8 years and still looks great, except for a grease spill off the BBQ. It is up against large windows on the south side of home as well. Maybe it was the manufacturer you bought it from. I Love my trex

Our trex is 10 years old and I pressure wash it every year and it is doing great. We also have the white specks which are probably just the bits of plastic which are a part of the trex. The only problem so far is that the wasps like to chew off bits to make their hives!

We installed Trex decking when we built our house 14 years ago. I would never use Trex again. It stains very badly, even just water stains. I contacted the Trex company but didn't get any suggestions that worked. We pressure wash, but doesn't make much difference. It has lasted, but looks terrible. I have a lot of decking, so would be mega expensive to replace. I talked to other people who have had same problem. I wonder if we could paint it.

We have the same problem likely made worse by trying to remove Moldova from this supposed maintenance free product. Contacted company directly. No help whatsoever. Never again with TREX.

We use a product called Wet and Forget, you spray it on and every time it rains the Trex gets cleaner. We get it at Ace Hardware. It did take several times before we could see any difference. We had what looked like mold on ours. Good Luck.

They do not warrant - They say they do, but completing the paperwork, they don't. Been there. (according to another responder, it was because it was prior the 'new' trex era)
