Mojito mint

Peg
by Peg
Just bought 2 sprigs of mojito mint plants. I know they are invasive so I put them in a deep pot. Can I leave them outside all winter till next spring? Or do I have to bring them inside for the winter? I live in zone 6, Pennsylvania.

In Florida you can't kill it. I'm not sure about Pennsylvania. It grows so fast. Test a pot outside and bring a spare inside.

Just put the pot of mint in a protected area over the winter, Peg. By the side of the foundation tucked in some mulch away from the wind and it will probably be fine. Here's some info: http://www.garden.org/articles/articles.php?q=show&id=2508

Oh, it's invasive, alright! It's a perennial, so it will come up every year. And it can withstand just about any temp. It sends off runners just below the surface of the soil- you can almost pull them out by hand, but one little root left behind will take off again. The best way to contain it is to either use a planter, or find a pot that's the size of the patch you want. Bury the pot, but leave the top 2 inches above the soil line. Plant you mint in the pot. This will contain the mint to that spot. This is how I grow spearmint. Just put your pots in a sheltered spot and they should winter through just fine.

Dee is exactly right. Last year it took over my garden and I had to hire someone to come in and help me rake below the surface and pull all the roots up. It's a PIA. The roots will even go out the bottom of a pot if sitting on soil.

Do I have to bury in soil? I'm afraid the roots will come out from the bottom of pot and grow like crazy like Georgia said. I was going to leave on my deck. I could bring it in my garage thru the Winter months?
