Tree in the shade

Lana
by Lana
The Aucuba didn't survive the transplant, unfortunately. I need a low-growing tree for a corner in the shade. Any suggestion??

Keeping a tree small is not easy - you might want to look at shrubs like Hydrangeas, Kerrias (get tall or can be pruned back) Andromedas and colorful perennials such as "Gold Heart" Bleeding heart and chautreuse-colored Spirea instead. Take the dead Acuba out after checking its base to see if there is any new growth (sometimes the top dies back and they regrow from the roots). Leave the space and your other two Acubas will fill out in a few years.

@Lana ~ the Kerria will take a lot of shade, so will the Bleeding Heart. Japanese Painted Fern might be pretty there too!

Japanese Maple may do well there & some varieties stay small, many varieties are very slow growing as well. Good luck!

Yes Lynn, I had it in mind but there is not enough space for the Japanese Maple, unfortunately. Thank you anyway. :-)

Shepard's hook and a hanging basket? Tall 'yard art'?

A nice bird bath would work. Not a lot grows in all shade

If you Google "shade plants in zone 8, you will get lots of results. Then read the descriptions of various plants, as well height, growing conditions and so on to make your decision. Good suggestions here too.

How about Azalea, they are different variety and dwarfs for low growing.
  • May I interject and say that the Aucuba that is still alive (I am assuming this is a current picture) will get larger! I live just above you in VA and the Aucuba is one of my fave shade plants and it will fill out. Plus you need to make sure not too close to the house. Plants really should not touch the house. I do not know what the rest of the area looks like but you need to give nature a chance to grow. If you want to fill in the area, then check out my profile pic with my shade garden. If you want to fill in the area, I would add more hosta, ferns, astilbe, aquilegia, and foam flower. happy gardening
