We had such and invasion of caterpillars in the north-west years ago the county sprayed because they were killing to many trees. Check with your county extension for advise in your area.

If they are tent caterpillars, and you will see a mass of spiderweb entangled way up in the tree, you will have to clip the mass from the tree branch and destroy it. My mom lived in the country on a farm, and they would soak dry corncobs in some flammable liquid, such as kerosene, attach it to a long pole (very tightly and carefully), and light it to use to burn the web out of the tree. If these two suggestions sound daunting and/or dangerous,I would have a tree service take care of them! Tree service, it is!

Sounds like webworms, or ten caterpillars. Sevin spray or an organic alternative. You can also rip open the webs and let the birds help you get rid of the caterpillars.
