I have managed to kill all the sprouts from a removed locust with triclopyr.

Douglas Hunt on Oct 07, 2011Pamela, if they are dead you can cut them off.. If there is any stump of the locust left, you should re-cut it and apply the triclopyr directly to the stump. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that you will not have new sprouts in the spring. Follow the same regimen in the spring if you see them, and eventually the plant will completely die out.Helpful Reply

Pamela on Oct 07, 2011The stump was ground at the time of tree removal a year ago. Had I known I would have treated it at the time. The roots just did not die, hence all the sprouts last spring. I was advised to use the triclopyr only in the fall , as that's when it would be drawn into the roots. Advice just did not continue about what to do after the sprouts died. I'll cut them down and wait until next spring to see if eradication was successful. If not, I'll retreat with triclopyr next fall. Thanks.Helpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on Oct 08, 2011It's true that the tree is sending its energy to the roots in the fall so that is the most effective time to use an herbicide, but if you don't want to give them a full growing season next year, there is nothing wrong with applications throughout the season to weaken them as they come up.Helpful Reply
