A little walkway out of pallet boards

This quick little project really couldn't be easier! Reclaimed pallet boards were used to create a new walkway through a flower bed. The planks make it an absolute dream to weed by simply ...»
lifting the applicable board, and are just high enough to clear any water run off. And yes, they are staying in place and have shown no rot in over 3 years thus far.

Mudroom Built Ins from Ikea Bookcases for $300

Detailed step-by-step instructions (and additional pictures) can be found on my blog here: http://www.thekimsixfix.com/2012/04/adding-m... ...»

Basically, I assembled 2 Billy Bookcases, 1 Billy Wall Shelf, 1 Smadal TV Console from IKEA and attached them to the wall up against a section of beadboard forming an inverted "U" shape. I also attached the bookshelves to the wall shelf for added stability. I left the TV stand free and just pushed it against the wall (as a bench and shoe storage) so that I could remove it to sweep under it. I did reinforce the TV stand with some metal L brackets to support the weight of my kids sitting (and standing and jumping) on it.

Where the shelves met the wall, I added quarter round trim and added corbels under the wall shelf for architectural interest. I also added crown molding along the tops of the shelves.

I had paint color matched and painted all the trim, beadboard and crown molding "Ikea White" (which is actually more of a cream color)

Lastly I added coat hooks and my mudroom built in was complete.

Total cost (shelves, hardware, paint, hooks): $309

Beautiful Outdoor Area On a $100 Budget!

I created this outdoor patio area for my husband I after we had just got married. Everything you see in the pictures cost around $100.00 using Dollar Tree, Ikea and Big Lots! I was so ...»
happy with the way it came out.

I had a plug in chandelier that I had purchased for my wedding that I knew I wanted to use centered above the table, and that's how my ideas got started. I then hung Lill Curtains ($2.50 from Ikea) Around the entire patio and it really changed the look instantly.

For a complete breakdown and helpful tips to get the same "look" you can visit my blog at:

A Green Christmas

No waste on Christmas morning! We use the same boxes each year and assign each person a ribbon color. Once the gifts are opened, the boxes are stacked into one another with the ribbons rolled into the smallest box and put away until next year. The money (& time not wrapping) we save each year allows for other indulgences and the environment doesn't suffer.

Solution for hanging multiple stockings

Why is it that most stocking hangers come in threes? Well, when you have more than 3 stockings, here's a great way to hang them using 3 hangers! Just use a curtain rod!

Are Keeping Rooms A "New" Kitchen Trend?

When Professional Remodeler Magazine asked us to comment about the trend of fireplaces in the kitchen, our minds immediately went to keeping rooms: http://bit.ly/Uq4Ioz ...»

Keeping rooms date back to colonial times when families would gather close to the kitchen fireplace to keep warm. Nowadays the kitchen is still the heart of the home and often the hub of all activities. Children and parents alike still want a place to gather close to the kitchen, but without children or guest under-feet while the household chefs are cooking!Traditionally these rooms would have brick or stone floors, but now we see wood floors more often with area rugs to soften the space.

Keeping rooms tend to have a positive influence on a home's resale value and buyer appeal. Do you have a keeping room? Show us: http://www.facebook.com/AKHomeRenovations
