Landscaping A Courtyard

The 2 Seasons
by The 2 Seasons
We have lived in our townhouse for four years since we downsized from the family home in the suburbs. Instead of a back yard, we have a charming and very private brick courtyard. It is the most inviting space, and we just finished removing some old plants and adding some new.
Originally, the walled area there filled with windows and a French door was an open breezeway. We did a total remodel of our townhouse before moving in, and we enclosed the breezeway to make it into a mudroom.
In our quest to soften the brick wall, we added two espaliered pyracanthas. The area did have roses, but they didn't get enough sun to grow well. The pyracanthas soften the brick wall nicely.
Behind the little brick divider, we have shade-loving hostas and boxwoods.
This clematis softens the wall nicely and adds color. We added another one to grow beside it.
Although it is small, the courtyard has an area for eating, sitting, grilling, growing herbs, and a bar area. To see more photos, please visit our blog.
