70's Dresser

Just got this at my local thrift store. I want to paint it and then use it as an entertainment center in my family room. Any suggestions on what color? And then ideas on the gold carved in places as well as new hardware? I am fairly new at this!

I think white with silver-leaf in the recesses and brushed nickel/chrome fixtures would be really classic and modern! But one place I love for inspiration for makeovers like this is: http://www.missmustardseedsmilkpaint.com/blog/

the room is soft earth tones. White would be great, the silver would fit! I had thought of a "muted" green with copper and will go the regular primer, sand, paint routine. Not interested in chalk paint, don't want distressing. So primer and paint seems the best solution. Is this veneer? Seems like it, just not sure how to tell for sure.

Chalk paint does not have to be distressed. With a very light sanding after painting and a clear soft wax you can get a beautiful finish. The beauty is in the ease of prep work that has to be done. Usually just a good cleaning and you are ready to paint.

Here is what we did. Removed the top two drawers for components, painted all but the top a great red, replaced the hardware, and it looks great.

@C_ann_g Believe it or not I used spray paint (either Krylon or Rustoleum are both great), I think the spray paint gives a nice even finish with no brush marks. When the paint was totally dry I went over it with Minwax early american stain with a wipe on wipe off technique to give it a more rustic look, but you could skip that if you like just the painted look.

Well, you are better than I with the can! I get too impatient, spray too heavy, ETC. Nice job on your part!
