Dehumidifying refrigerator and freezer

We live in central Texas and it has been extremely humid for several months here. We need something to dehumidify the freezer and refrigerator but I have no idea what product to buy. Everything I've read about dehumidifiers indicates they are for areas inside the home, ie basements and bathrooms. My frozen items are getting ice crystals and the jars and bottles in the fridge are soaking wet. Anybody know?

The only thing that will work is to have them in an air-conditioned room. The air conditioner will remove the humidity from the air.

Check the door gaskets to make sure they are closing properly and your drain hose for blockage also it is helpful to google your make & model for problems.

Shirley, I'm in Austin. I think Sharyn may have the right idea. I had that problem last year and had new gaskets put on my doors. This Spring they've been fine. i do still have some trouble with the ice maker getting frosted up but at least my refrigerator is not a puddle and my freezer doesn't make frost.

Many thanks to all who replied. I do appreciate it. The appliances are brand new, less than 6 months old. They are in an air conditioned environment. I wrote to a mfg and they have no product for sale that is for this application. I think the humidity here in central Texas may have something to do with it. I'll see what happens when that lets up. Isn't this great site? Love it. Im going to leave this unresolved on the site for now. Maybe someone out there has some info. Thanks again.

Shirley, they can be brand new and have faulty gaskets. I would still change them and see. I live in San Antonio and we do not have this problem either.
  • If they are only 6 months old...are they still under any kind of warranty? I'd have them send a techinician out to check them out. I'm not sure if this would be a solution or not (I've not tried it) but the product "Damp RId"...comes in a container ..you remove the protective shipping wrapper and place where humidity is an issue. I purchase mine at the "Dollar Tree" (its an off brand but works the same). I have them in every room, closet, under sinks..anywhere there is a humidity issues(humidity issues in the Gulf Coast are everywhere!!..lol). They say they can be put in medicine cabinets...so I'm not sure how inside a fridge or freezer would work. They are self contained so they don't touch anything. Once crystals are dissovled ( you can see the water collected in the bottom halve of the container) just dispose as directed. Maybe this will help.
