Banana Plant

I planted this banana plant and so far so good. However, I read that I'm supposed to cut out the "broad-leafed" suckers. But I can't tell which ones are the broad-leaf suckers so I've just been letting all the suckers grow! Can anyone identify for me the broad-leafed suckers?

When the plant bears fruit and you harvest them you cut down the entire thing to the ground and the other suckers will continue to grow.

Ditto what Brenda says. I grow bananas for a living. Most banana plants only produce one bunch of bananas. In the mean time the other shoots growing will produce your next bunch of bananas. The main stalk will die back or you can cut it down.

I grow Banana plants in my landscape. I would leave the smaller plants, they will grow into their own plant. You are on your way to having a Banana grove! Enjoy!

WHERE WOULD I FIND BANANA PLANTS?

I have a number of banana plants, about sixteen feet tall. Although too cold here outside Vancouver, Canada, to grow bananas to ripeness, I had bananas last year that were about 5 inches long. They went black in the fall as the temperatures fell. I just cut off the tattiest leaves at the bottom and dig up the little ones when they get to be too many and sell them. Good luck with yours.
