Stain not what I wanted

Pam

We just had new stairs and railing put in our house and I did the staining. I put a wood conditioner on it all before I stained. I used a water based stain. I put the coating on top of the stain and now that it's done I don't like the color. It didn't go on evenly and it's a little lighter than what I wanted. It's kind of streaked in a couple of places. Can I use your method to re stain them and then put on the poly coating to protect them? how much sanding would I have to do, down to the bare wood again? Please help me. Thank you , Pam

@SLS Construction & Building Solutions LLC do you have any advice for Pam?
  • You can always go darker with stain (lighter requires a lot of sanding) - light sand, stain & wipe - areas appearing to dark see if you can rub some more off or not as much from lighter areas. also remember that stain will start getting darker the more coats you do. sand between each coat lightly & then I would finish off with poly
