Go for it. I've used every kind of paper when decoupaging: scrapbook paper, wrapping paper, magazine pics, even my own colored pieces. When you've finished, be sure to use a sealer, either matte or gloss. Decoupage glue tends to remain tacky and stick to itself, even after years of 'curing.' Usually this doesn't result in damage, but it makes it hard to get lids off.

the wonderful thing about decoupage is you really can use any sort of paper, including thick wallpapers and even cloth, the key is the glue to water ratio and patience, allow significan drying time and when you seal be sure to use several coats of poly. especially for things that may be outdoors using the proper seal will make your project last much longer.

Easy to do with any sort of paper. I have done this, but I did not use glue, I used the clear polyurethane, wet the surface, applied the paper, then coated over it again with the polyurethane. Worked quite well.

This may help - there are plenty of ideas. It is such a fun thing to do, and works on just about everything. http://www.hometalk.com/b/1799328/decoupage

I use Modge Podge and have done a cute step stool, painted bright yellow and decoupaged cut out paper dolls from Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion magazine (no longer in print). Have printed black & white photos of grandkids (use plain old copy paper) and decoupaged them onto big alphabet letters. Did one for each grandchild (10)!! Made a cute wooden box into a memory box for my granddaughter when she went to college using photos of her and her family. Have cut quotes out of cardstock with my Cricut and decoupaged onto 12 x 12 ceramic floor tiles. Made monogrammed coasters with wall tiles. Next project--cover an old 2 drawer file cabinet with copies of vintage sheet music. Hope it looks good!!

I don't see any comments on metal, or in my case, a file cabinet. I have been dying to try it. I just don't want to ruin the cabinet. Think it would work? I look forward to responses. Thanks in advance.

Possible choices of glue for decoupaging: ModgePodge, Aleene's Decoupage Glue, or my favorite, Golden Matte Gel.

@carla Randall and @Valerie Thanks so much for the ideas. I was thinking of applying chalk paint then decoupage......I was on the same track. I think I will try that. I'll report back after I finish the project so that others will benefit. thanks, girls.
