How do I keep racoons out of my flower bed??

They keep pooping in my landscaping and laying on and smashing my daylilies....ugh!!!!!!!!

I had trouble with cats using my mulch for a litter box. I tried some chemicals, but finally read somewhere that they don't like netting because their claws get tangled. I bought several yards of coarse netting at the fabric store (black, the color of mulch) and used metal stakes to batten it down. It worked to keep them from pottying there. Don't know what to do about the flowers.

I live in a wooded area on a lake. I have lots of raccoons visit every night because my neighbor FEEDS them! I keep them out of my garden by using a product called 'Repels All' that I purchase at Lowe's and Home Depot. WalMart also carries it in some stores. I put the product in small butter bowls that I poked holes in the lids and placed around my garden. I also sprinkled it around my garden but it smells really bad until you water it in. Then only the animals can smell it when they come near. I haven't had anymore trouble with raccoons, deer, mice rabbits snakes or any other rodents in my garden. Cats do not like it either.

I have had good luck with mothballs. I just toss them around in my flower beds. Critters seem to hate the smell. (I actually like the smell of mothballs.) I have also had good luck with sprinkling cayenne pepper around, although it washes away with the rain.

We get deer, rabbits, raccoons, squirrels and opossum here. This year I put in a strawbale garden. In the book I bought, the writer recommends the Scarecrow sprinkler as a deterrent. I have also read comments by people who bought it and it is highly recommended as a non lethal way to deter animals. I have heard that used kitty litter may work. I know this may not seem like much of an advantage but I understand they don't like the smell from cats. Maybe without the poop?
