Permeable paver systems can be used for patios and walkways. Permeable pavers allow water and runoff to filter through the gaps in the pavers and filtrate into the ground. They are a great green infrastructure product to reduce stormwater runoff. This walkway and patio were constructed out of Techo-Bloc "Mista" paver and helps reduce the amount of stormwater entering Lake George.

I know prices differ according to region, but how does this compare cost-wise to concrete? And could an average DIYer install them? They look fantastic!
  • The pavers run about $5.00/square foot to purchase. Typically requires the same prep as a concrete sidewalk or asphalt driveway. We'd recommend placing a layer of fabric at the sub-base layer before placing a 12-inch layer of crushed stone (No.2). You will also need to rent a tamper to compact the soil and stone layers otherwise the pavers will settle and heave. I can't stress how important the prep and compation is. It will make or break the longevity of the project. The installation is pretty straight-forward once everything is compacted, but we would recommend reviewing paver installation procedures at www.icpi.org. It is not for beginner DIYers-installation of the stone layers so that the permeable pavers function correctly is critical. Do a little research before tackling a project like this.
