I have a white, shiny-finished aluminum storm door. I would like to paint it a sandstone colour. What steps to take, what primer, etc. Thanks.

The first thing to do is wash it down with mild soap and water . Let that dry and then sand it with some wet or dry 320 grit paper to scuff up the surface . Then you can spray paint it any color you would like putting on one light coat first and then another coat until you get the finish you want . If you can't find a color you like go to any NAPA auto parts store and they can mix and put into a spray can any color you would like ............. Good luck !!!!
  • Thank you Robert Snow for your advice....so happy Marion Nesbitt for asking. Can't wait to try this myself!

I always forget about the car paint - after all, it IS more durable! Does it require a sealer @Robert Snow ?

Not really Tena Barke , but seeing the use it gets maybe a good sealer under the top coat sure wouldn't hurt !!

It will be interesting to see if the paint sticks after a winter or two. Aluminum really expands and contracts with the temperature variations and you will probably notice that the paint will peel or flake off.

Will be trying this. Our Manitoba winters are horrible, but our car paint lasts! We have Canadian Tires stores here that carry auto paint.
