Painting over grasscloth

Is it possible to paint over grasscloth or is that a totally insane idea? I have never seen it addressed anywhere before on a blog or forum. Some guidance is appreciated.

Yes it is possible. Make sure all the edges are glued down and that the grass cloth is in good condition. ,Prime with a good primer like Kilz or Zinser 123 then paint whatever color you want to. you can also pint over wallpaper with the same method. I painted my kitchen wallpaper several years ago and it looks as good as the day I painted it.

I agree with Dee. The important thing is that the grasscloth (or wallpaper) is in good condition. I'd use a satin finish paint, not a high gloss. A stiff brush might be a good idea to be sure all the area is covered with paint. Mask surrounding areas for spatter!

Like Audrey said, do not use high gloss, it will show all imperfections. I would use egg shell or satin. Remember grass cloth has little bits and pieces, so you are going to have to use an extra thick roller.

If you paint over grass-cloth and then at sometime want to take off the grass-cloth, you will have a VERY difficult time doing so. My advice is "DON'T"!
