Remove white buildup on tile above bath tub, the tile looks dull.

The tile is light yellow and white (60's). It is pretty but very dull and I can't seem to get it shiny. Any suggestions on how to get rid of the calcium buildup and make it shine again. I tried CSR but even that is not working completely. Thanks! Barb.

I sent ya an email, but decided to post for others. There is a product called Wink, comes in a brown bottle. Put it into a glass bowl and apply with a faint brush. It will remove the the calcium build up plus any rust stains. Wear safety glasses and gloves, it will burn like a monkey if you get on your skin or in your eye.

Scrub with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar,in a circular motion with a soft cloth, let it sit a minute or so, then rinse. The buildup should be gone or mostly gone. When done and tile is dry, you can prevent build up again by taking a soft cloth which has been lightly sprayed with furniture polish and rub it in. Please be careful not to spray near or in tub or shower because the floor will be slippery

If it is calcium build up and the finish hasn't been etched off of it there is away to get hard water build off off. Weak muratic acid. Or we use The Works Toliet Bowl cleaner because it has weak muratic acid in it. But if it is etched from cleaners like vinegar it will remove the sealer or shine on it. We spray the works on and let it set but we continue to run water so it doesn't discolor the metal at the bottom of the tub or shower. Then we spray it off after we have scrubbed it. It is well ventilated and we use masks and gloves. It it hasn't been damaged it will clean it up. If the sealer in the tile has been damaged it there won't be a change. I do this several times and it has never failed me. Unless there is damage already.

try a mixture of Dawn dish washing detergent & Vinegar. mixed 1/2 & 1/2; so if you use a cup of Dawn also use a cup of Vinegar. The Dawn is a grease buster & the Vinegar is a mild acid that will power through the grime. :) easy& inexpensive. Let science work with you.

I would try cleaning vinegar spray it on and let it sit 10 min rinse may take a few apps. at first but then just clean weekly. you can also mix 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup blue dawn in a spray bottle and use that.

Diluted vinegar or lemon juice will loosen the soap scum. The problem is that it runs off vertical surfaces too fast for it to work. If you could soak towels or cloths with the liquid and hang them on the wall somehow, then try scrubbing after a few hours, it might work.

@Darla Maybe you could make a "paste" using equal parts such as stated above in several posts for vertical surfaces. I have read that applying wax after cleaning will keep your tiles cleaner for a long time. Recently, I found a wax called, "Nu-Vinyl," and there is no rubbing or buffing, just use a soft cloth and apply. The next day, apply a second coat. It is long lasting protection and shine to vinyl, rubber, auto and household products. Used it on my outdoor furniture (painted wood) and it works great! Getting ready to clean my tile in the bathroom and kitchen and apply this great product. Made in the USA.

I've used paper towels soaked in straight vinegar. It will adhere to the wall as long as it's not dripping wet. Let sit for a couple of hours, remove and then scrub with a baking and vinegar mixture. Mix it to paste consistency. I would try this before using harsh chemicals. You never know what it might do to the finish on the tub.

@Kate Don't be so hard on yourself. The first few times I sprayed and then it dawned on me to use paper towels. Hmm, maybe were both slow :)

I use Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom cleaner Extend-a-clean it works like a charm. It sprays a foam that sticks to the wall and then I wipe it off with a Mr. Clean sponge. When rubbing you will actually feel the tile being cleaned, the surface loses it's gritty feel, then you know your are done. It also protects for four showers. I have also used peroxide 3% on my shower walls, stainless steel sinks.
