Updating 70's kitchen

We've updated much of our 1977 house, but the kitchen is a bit intimidating. I'm willing to paint the cabinets-they're in decent shape, but I would like to replace the doors. The linoleum is coming up and the plastic countertop is broken in places. It also goes up the backsplash, so that needs covered. I wondered if anyone knows of a good place to get unfinished cabinet doors, and any DIY ideas on the rest would be helpful. Very strict budget, as usual. Thanks so much. I love this site and the pics you all share! Sorry I don't have pics, but picture dark brown cabinets, yellow/gold ugly formica and drk brown torn vinyl (floor).

Lowes carries preformed counter tops with back splashes attached for very reasonable prices.

We had a 70's kitchen with harvest gold appliances and yellow laminate countertops. The cabinets were melamine but in good condition. Linoleum was replaced with tile. We used Home Depot to refinish the cabinets (they replace doors and drawer faces and boxes and leave the interior). We put in a new laminate counter and backsplash with a granite look alike- all for about $7000. All the work was done in 2 days. If concrete floor is in good condition under the linoleum you might consider staining it. We also looked at Granite Transformations which put a granite shell over your existing countertops and backsplash. Hope this helps.
  • could try painting counter tops after filling in chips. There is a product available on line called Giani. This will give you a faux granite. Also there is a product out of Quebec called Smart Tiles. It is a peel and stick tile that gives you the look of glass mosaic tiles. Easy to install. A variety of products.

Renee-- You might want to try your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Builders often donate excess, unused materials. Plus, there are good, used cabinet doors as well, donated by people remodeling their kitchens. Also, try Craigslist. Search "cabinet doors" (with the quotes) under the materials category. You might also look into local non-profits that specialize in helping people that have gone through drug addiction or alcoholism rehab to get back on their feet by developing a marketable trade. They sometimes maintain warehouses of product (including commercially made, donated overstock material as well as items made by the program participants) that are open to the public. Good luck!
