Homemade chalk paint

I have used several homemade chalk paint recipes and they end up rough not smooth like Annie Sloan. Is there one that is as easy to use but is affordable?

Rent a professional paint mixer and dose the plaster of Paris carefully

I have never tried it, but calcium carbonate powder is popular, and doesn't have the nasty particles that can get in your lungs that are in plaster of paris or grout when you sand.

Premixed joint compound works well, just make sure you mix it up with the paint well

@Betty Basche Mix one part JC and 4 parts paint, It too thick, thin with water. You can also do this with spackle. The Painted object comes out very smooth. Joint compound is a form of calcium carbonate. The 5 gallon bucket cost around $5.00 or less.

Deco Art has a wonderful Chalky Finish paint, only $8.00. Available at Hobby Lobby or Michael's.

This is the greatest chalk paint recipe I have ever found. I got it from a blogger who has a wonderful booth in Virginia somewhere and a wonderful blog as well. The recipe is as follows: 3/4 c. Calcium Carbonate mixed with enough water to make it smooth. Add to 3 c. latex paint. Mix well. I learned the HARD way to use the NOW brand of CC and I order it from Amazon.com. I just made a batch last night. It's not my first and won't be my last! Good luck!! Oh, and her blog is Confessions of a Serial DIYer.
