Question about laminate kitchen countertops

We are in the process of "redoing" our kitchen. I don't have much money but it's getting a fresh coat of paint and I have solid wood cabinets and hardwood floors. All of that is staying. My countertop is beige, as the pictures show. The change I make to the countertop might be temporary due to some things I am going through, but I need a change NOW. My kitchen is going to be a light gold and I have red and green decor. What on earth can I do to this countertop that is not going to cost me an arm and a leg. And GO...
A better picture of the countertop. I plan on putting square tin tiles behind stove.
The border is now gone.
My man getting everything ready. I have a stainless steel sink and a new stainless steel kitchen faucet. I plan on putting square tin tiles behind stove.
This is the dining room. The gold in the kitchen is lighter slightly. I mixed it with some white paint, so this is more an accent wall. This is the new border.

I believe there is a countertop refinishing kit at most stores like Menards or Lowes. I think it is made by Rustoleum, Looks like it is a little time consuming, but the end result pictures look great. $148 per box that covers up to 25 sq ft. I am considering this myself. Good Luck!

You could paint your counter tops without using a kit. You can do the same here on Hometalk: http://www.hometalk.com/search/posts?filter=painting%20laminate%20counter%20tops Have fun and I hope you find exactly what you are looking for!!!!

I have done both, my mother in law bought the kit to do the countertops at LOWES & it took a weekend with drying time in between - came out really pretty & then we put her house up for sale & after her kitchen redo it definetly helped the sale!!! ( SOLD it in less than 5 days) then about 15 yrs ago when we were in our old house, I was in the mood to redo my kitchen too, dark cabinets, I painted Seashore white (just a hint of cream was in them I believe, but they mainly looked white) the countertops I bought several large bottles of crafters paint the non toxic ones since I have 4 children, & went to work I designed a faux marble appearance design then after I got it to where I liked it I sealed it with the sealant they sell in the craft section, It held up for about a good 3 & 1/2 yrs then we got a new counter. But everyone loved the counter until it was time to get a new one, it was starting to sink in around the sink sides, but hey it was from the 70's. Hope this helps & good Luck!!!!

@Helen Cocuzza When you primered the countertop, did you cover all the primer with the craft paint? Some of my primer is still peeking through and I don't want to seal it yet if I have to cover it all...thank you. Lori.

Those laminate countertops are only around $100 for a 6 foot length. Or look into buying just the sheet of material and glue it right down on top of the existing one. Personally I would just spend the couple hundred and get new ones. Can't go wrong. Or be crafty and put whatever you want on top of existing top and seal it.

Since your laminate countertop seems to have a curve in the front and on the back (for want of a better description) you can't just glue another sheet of formica over it. I would get the paint kit made for formica counter tops....Looks really good if done right and you mentioned it was going to be temporary.

We used a Rustoleum stone Faux effect spray-paint (http://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/american-accents/stone-spray/), spray-painted our '50's laminate, and covered that with three coats of food-grade polyeurathane. All total, about $40.

@Michele A. Horsfall how is it holding up and how long ago was it? Can you send me a picture, please? Thank you so much.

We did this over 8 years ago. It is holding up beautifully, and my husband is a cook. I'll take some pics for you; don't have any readily available.

I love the Giani's granite paint products. Not expensive (around $80/kit and will cover the average kitchen), beautiful, easy to do and use, also have cabinet a d Ppliance paints. Did my own counters over 4 years ago and they still look like new. I have done many (in my own business, Granite for Less, LLC)

I used Rustoleum paint for my laminate countertop. I sanded the laminate first then rolled the paint on. Two coats were used to cover it completely. I am thinking about putting a sealer on top to protect it better. Was super easy to do and dried quickly. Cheapest method I found.

Hey Elaine I was thinking of using this on my countertops to make it look like granite but dont you have to use a primer first?

  • Elaine M Elaine M on May 30, 2017

Yes, you definitely need a primer before doing anything to the countertops. Good Luck!
