Help with painting my deck

Kathy Owen | Petticoat Junktion on Jun 15, 2015My first thought is to go with a light color since your home is white. I would do it white.Helpful Reply

Lindcurt on Jun 15, 2015Since you live close to the beach - why not an aquamarine color? Anything would blend with white.Helpful Reply

GL SCOTT on Jun 15, 2015Here's the questions I would ask ... How much do you want the decks to be "featured" ... As others have suggested, a light color (I cannot tell if your home is white or another color like dove gray from the picture) would make the deck blend and disappear more ... but, if you love color and want to make it a focal point, the aquamarine suggested would also go well. For me, as someone who is conservative, loves color but who is also a fan of blending features ... I would go with a light color for the decking and spindle rails (if you go with white just be sure it is durable as you'll need to clean it more often) ... but how about adding some color to the post and the top ledges? Conservatively you can add the shutter color or go for a color that "pops" and gives a nod to your beach location (Navy? Aquamarine? Or any other Summery color you love). I hope you'll post a before and after pic. Good luck.Helpful Reply

Gretchen Mercer on Jun 15, 2015We just did some refreshing on a family home of ours that is has white siding and a front deck area. We used a medium light shade of gray. I love the look...but I love cottage-style. If you were to do that, I believe it would add dimension to the front of your home and would look great all the way around. You could add pops of whatever color you like with flowers, furniture and accessories. I hope you do post your finished project!Helpful Reply

GL SCOTT on Jun 15, 2015Here's a "simple place to start" without committing to "trendy" a look...perhaps paint your "RISE" (the vertical part) on the stairs white (again, if your house is gray go with gray) and the "TREADS" (the horizontal tops) black ... I would still do the spindles white. That's a good classic base to work from. Go with the aquamarine on the door to start. If you love the combination of colors .... then the top rails and posts will be a personal taste call. I think black on those still gives you the option of adding aquamarine on top of the black top rail in a pattern that appeals to you and ties into the door color. Maybe a shell pattern using the same paint as the door (or go wild and add a few to the treads of the stairs too)? Or just a clean aquamarine stripe on top (using painters tape to lay it out on top) Once again you can also add aquamarine to your stairs by painting a stripe on each step if you think you want more color. Sounds like alot of work but using black and white with a third accent color allows alot of freedom to change your look in the future ... And I absolutely agree ... accessories like planters and a wreath on the front door can add alot of seasonal interest.Helpful Reply

GL SCOTT on Jul 01, 2015Thanks for the update ... had wondered what you decided to go with ... I LIKE the gray .... as a blend of your primary home colors (white + black= gray), it is a good choice. Plus it gives your home a driftwood/beach cottage theme look. And you can still add pops of color on the furniture cushions & flowerpots. Well done! Please post pics when you finish.Helpful Reply

Lindcurt on Jul 02, 2015Love the gray - it does look drift-woody. (new wood to add to your dictionary) It just needs a few accessories to punch it up a bit. That may be the place to add in some ocean décor items. Fishing nets, life preservers, buoys, etc. Some large rustic pots with flowers would brighten it up too. Some of the sea related items could be silhouettes cut out of plywood. How about a Big Ship's steering wheel hanging in the back railing? Recently I saw a porch canopy made of sail shaped panels. I don't remember where I saw it and didn't save it since we have windsurfing sails already. They used three sails over the deck as a sunshade. It was so cool. You might consider the aquamarine color for the front door. Decide on the shutter color after you paint the front deck. They may need to be another shade of gray but darker than the porch. Just like decorating a living room. Neutral background with pops of colorHelpful Reply
