How can you update/refinish a limestone countertop?

Question

We have a limited budget but want to update, refinish, or install a material over the existing limestone kitchen countertop.  It is in the house we recently bought.  The limestone is in good shape but we do not care for it.  We discovered it is easy to stain and scratch.

I question what you perceive as limestone. In all my years as a remodeler I've never seen limestone used as countertops. Limestone is an extremely soft sedimentary rock and will crumble, would be almost impossible to seal and has virtually no strength in depths of a few inches. What you most likely have is marble. Marble, a harder form of sedimentary rock will stain and it will scratch as it is probably the most porous and softest of materials used for countertops. The key to maintaining true marble is to have it initially professionally sealed then resealing it yourself once a year. You didn't hear this from me, wink wink, but I have known some granite and marble installers to use a high end automotive grade paste wax on marble when resealing it. It's non-yellowing, will handle being wet and will protect it against most food and drinks that will stain it. If it's scratched the only remedy is to have it re-polished using diamond grit sanding disks and papers. Not something most homeowners will have access to.

Check on plaster paint countertop kits--easy to do--they are out of Catoosa, Okla. my cabinets look like granite--and some were butcher block and the rest laminate. cost about $100. and does a little over 20'.

Take a close and very good picture of your counter top into a store like lowes and have them look and determine if you have limestone and how best to make it look better and more durable.

If the only problem is the durability could sealing it solve that?
